Hundreds of organizations provide emergency relief and material aid in Victoria
Two larger well known organizations include St Vincent de Pauls and Salvation Army and there are many small church and community organizations run by volunteers. To find the nearest or most appropriate agency to provide you with emergency relief you can contact either of the above larger agencies .You can also contact your local Community Support and Information centre .Some of these Community Support Centres also provide Emergency Relief directly themselves.
Items which constitute material aid or emergency relief can include the following
Food Vouchers A ‘gift voucher’ for a local supermarket which enabes you to purchase food and toiletries etc , often with restrictions such as no alcohol or cigarettes. One of the most common forms of emergency relief.
Food Parcels Parcels of food items and grocery staples.
Household goods Such as clothes bedding household items furniture and whitegoods
Bill payment — bills (gas, electricity, phone, etc.) paid on your behalf, usually with a
cheque made out directly to the billing company, or with vouchers.
Cash — either direct or as a cheque that can be cashed at a nearby bank; these days, not many agencies provide cash however .
Transport assistance — Tram/train/bus tickets and/or petrol vouchers.
Pharmacy assistance — Vouchers to help pay for prescription medications or toiletries.
Information — help to negotiate debts, referral for other services, etc.
Utility Relief Grant Scheme — Available to people who hold a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Gold Card. This provides once-off assistance if you are unable to pay your electricity, gas or water bills due to a temporary financial crisis or unexpected hardship.
Non-Mains Utility Relief Grant Scheme — Provides once-off assistance in times of
financial crisis if you use LPG gas for domestic purposes.
Capital Grant Scheme — Provides once-off assistance to cardholders in financial hardship to repair or replace an essential household appliance that is causing high utilities costs (e.g. a faulty heater, etc.).
Hardship Relief Grant Scheme — Once-off grant to help with the cost of connecting to a compulsory water and sewerage connection scheme. Contact your electricity or gas company, your LPG gas retailer or your water supplier for an application form.An emergency relief provider or a financial counsellor can help you fill it in. For more information contact the Department of Human Services on free call 1800 658 521.

WHERE TO TURN
When crises or emergency situations arise in life as sadly they sometimes do often quite unexpectedly it is hard to think straight when you don’t know where your next meal is coming from or are worried about how you are going to be able to afford to eat or feed the family ,provide essential items of clothing and furniture or need assistance with paying bills.Though hopefully this period of hardship and financial difficulty will be short lived this list is compiled specific to various choir regions to reassure members in any of the areas that practical help is close at hand in difficult times .
Covering Melbourne Central ,Suburban and Regional areas
The St Vincent De Paul Contact Centre 1300-305-330
Vinnys has a referral number which covers the whole of Melbourne.(As above )You first need to ring the above number to make an appointment .You then will be asked to provide a few details of your circumstances and needs over the phone .Next an appointment is set up for a St Vincent de Pauls worker to come and visit you in your home.Usually visits from workers happen within a few days of making the appointment .These visits are generally conducted with kindness compassion and discretion by Vinnys workers .St Vincent de Pauls offer food vouchers food parcels furniture and other material aid usually on a six weekly basis.
The Salvation Army Drop In and Community Resource Centres
The Salvation Army provides material aid such as food vouchers and parcels , clothing furniture, help with bills etc through its community welfare offices .These are located all over Melbourne and across the State. One usually needs to ring to make an appointment for these centres .You will be referred to a Salvation Army centre that is located in the area in which you live. Check for the opening times for these centres .as most of them have part time opening hours and many of them require you to ring first to make appointments .Here are a list of Salvation Army Centre in the vincinity of the various choir locations.
Community Support and Information Centres
I have also provided information about these centres for each Community Choir region as these centres will be a valuable source of information about not only material aid and emergency relief choir members may need help with can also assist with information about resources, health ,educational and recreational services and opportunities available in the local community.

GEELONG NORTH 3215
The Geelong Food Relief Centre provides emergency food relief whereby clients upon receipt of a valid food voucher - issued by one of our linked agencies - are able to visit one of two centres and exchange the voucher for food. Its two centres are set up in a mini-supermarket where clients can make their own choices. It also has a second service whereby agencies from the outer lying areas of Geelong come and take goods back to their local area for handing out to clients in need when it is too far to travel into town. These items are usually non perishables and are mainly obtained from Foodbank Victoria. They estimate they support around 700 people each week..

Many people in freecycle.org work on a first come first serve basis If you are fortunate enough to respond early enough you may be the lucky applicant and can make arrangements to pick the item up from the advertisers place at a mutually suitable time .
Otherwise you may have an item someone is looking for which you would be happy to give away to someone who has requested the same in the WANTED posts
and you can email them to let them know and arrange for their inspection or pick up of the item also at a mutually suitable time .

MATERIAL AID Assistance with Food ,Clothing ,Furniture, Help with paying bills .etc

Freecycle.org is a wonderful world wide community organization which has millions of members and dozens of locality chapters nationwide. The basic premise of freecycle.org is for members to pass on its unwanted and no longer needed items entirely free of charge to other members to contribute to recycling highly useable items preventing them from going into landfill and creating environmental sustainability .Not only does it give you immediate access to a wide range of FREE second hand household and other goods but it gives you access to a wonderful community of ecologically and socially likeminded people interested in sharing resources and environmentally sustainable lifestyles .
You become a member by logging onto the website as indicated above and finding the nearest local chapter and clicking onto the log in/ join up link and providing a few details. You are then able to start trading straight away .You receive Offers and Wanted Ads which other members post and which are sent daily to your specified email address. You can peruse these and respond to any you like by replying to their emails Or else you can post your own ads for items you would either like to give away or are looking for See add posts link.
